Matt presented his report on the Sustainability Standards that are being proposed by the Canadian Sustainability Standards Board to County Council. “They will reach into every business all the way up and down a supply chain. If you're a beef producer in the county of Newell you might be getting a phone call from JBS or Tyson Foods or Cargill whoever else is required to disclose their carbon footprint and they'll be asking you about your operational practices which will require you as a small business to have a plan to start tracking these things so they can meet their reporting requirements. You can spend a lot of time measuring a lot of things and it's interesting information but at the end of the day you don't make a lick a difference and you erode a lot of value.”

The County is encouraging businesses and individuals in our area to respond. “Hopefully we can get some uptake on this because I think the intention was for this to go unnoticed and to just slide through and I don't think it behooves us to let that happen.”–Reeve Doerksen

Theft of an Amazon package - While on patrol Brooks General Investigation Section located a “prolific property crime offender,” stealing an Amazon package from a residence. The male was arrested. A search revealed possession documents belonging to multiple people. The male was held for a bail hearing and later released.

AgriTourism roundtable - “We were thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm at our first AgriTourism roundtable. The discussions were engaging, sparking numerous innovative ideas and opportunities for various farms,  businesses and organizations to collaborate on creating new agritourism experiences in our region. There was significant interest in participating in Open Farm Days, which we are really excited about!” –Jaime McIntosh, Executive Director, Brooks Region Tourism

Global Village hosted an anti-hate round table. Crucial steps were taken to bridge cultural divides and educate both law enforcement and immigrant communities about each other’s perspectives.

County Open House - Giving residents an opportunity to be informed and provide meaningful input on matters that may impact them. Administration from various departments will be in attendance to answer questions. Economic Development will be attending. Planning & Development staff will be available to respond to questions. Municipal Services staff will be in attendance to respond to inquiries on roads, and other infrastructure such as water or sewer servicing. Municipal Enforcement staff have been invited to answer questions on the Animal Control Bylaw, Unsightly Premises and any other Bylaw or enforcement concerns that the public may have questions about. County Councillors will also be in attendance. The Open House is scheduled for 3-7 PM on June 6.
