Advocating for the Community - With the Municipal General Election approaching on October 20, Councillor Marissa Wardrop shares her accomplishments, challenges, and future goals.

Wardrop takes pride in being a strong advocate for underrepresented voices at the decision-making table. “I’ve been an honest, reliable, and dedicated councillor since day one,” she said. “I take great pride in always doing the right thing, even when it’s difficult.”

Her biggest win? Maintaining a strong track record of thoughtful decision-making. “I take every decision seriously, and the positive feedback I receive is incredibly rewarding,” she shared. Her work has contributed to key improvements for recreation, families, and local non-profits. She is now focused on expanding city trails and developing a new spray park in Uplands.

The biggest surprise of her term was the steep learning curve of municipal governance. “Even though I expected to learn a lot, the first two years were intense,” she admitted. For those considering running for council, she advises being ready to read, research, and work hard.

New Bus Route - Intercity bus service Rider Express is considering reviving its Calgary-to-Regina route, with a potential stop in Brooks. After three previous unsuccessful attempts, the company is gathering community input to better understand local demand and service needs.

Policing Priorities - A community consultation survey, conducted from February 18 to March 5, 2025, gathered 150 responses from residents in the City of Brooks and County of Newell. The feedback will ensure policing efforts align with local concerns. With drug enforcement ranked as the top priority, RCMP will focus on targeting drug producers and distributors alongside property crime prevention and traffic safety initiatives.

Uplands Spray Park - the Outdoors Committee has recommended a new Community Spray Park at Upland Road W, west of 3rd Street W. The proposed 35-square-meter spray park will feature six interactive elements and an actuator system that conserves water by running for a set time before shutting off. The 2024 budget allocated $100,000 for the project, but an additional $100,000 is needed to complete construction. Funding would come from the Canada Community Building Fund. If approved, the spray park could be completed by the end of 2025, providing a new outdoor recreation option for the community.

Downtown Brooks Business - Businesses in downtown Brooks will see their annual Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) tax set for 2025. The total business assessment for the BRZ has risen slightly to $173,000, indicating a slowly growing business presence. The BRZ tax typically ranges from $130 to $390 per business. These funds support efforts to improve and promote the downtown area, benefiting the 80+ businesses in Downtown Brooks. City Council will review the BRZ budget, if approved, notices will be sent to affected businesses, giving them a chance to attend the April 7 Council Meeting to voice support or concerns.
