I asked Mohammed Idriss if his role as a City Councillor has been what he thought it would be?

The Municipal Government Act (MGA) establishes the roles and duties of elected officials on Municipal Councils. These duties revolve around considering the welfare and interests of the municipality and bringing to the Council’s attention anything that would promote the welfare and best interests of the community. Once those matters are discussed and evaluated, the Council can exercise its power only through bylaw or resolution.

In less than three months, I will complete my third year on Council. The journey so far has been much more rewarding than I expected. It has been a valuable opportunity to learn more about my community while contributing to making it a better place for all of us. The more I learn, the more I am able to make well-informed and considerate decisions. This approach of ongoing learning, in my opinion, is what keeps Council in tune with the community and connected to the average citizen and their needs. It is imperative for us as Councillors to be engaged with what is happening in the community for us to be effective.

As I look forward to the coming years, I am committed to continuing this journey of learning and service. Together, we can build a stronger, more vibrant community where every voice is heard and valued.

County of Newell aid to Jasper - the Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) asked the County of Newell for a tender, (firefighting apparatus that specializes in the transport of water from a water source to a fire scene) and a class three fire engine to support efforts in Jasper National Park. Along with the request the County agreed to send seven firefighters for a deployment of up to seven days, with the possibility of rotating shifts if needed. The Duchess Fire Department will provide the tender. Contingencies are in place for automatic Mutual Aid available if needed from nearby areas. Bassano will contribute one of its fire engines. They will rely on their remaining units and the ability to call on Rosemary, Gem, or Brooks for additional support if major events occur. The province provides cost recovery to municipalities for fire apparatus and firefighter support.

County of Newell Electoral Boundary was advertised and the petition period to pass it has passed without a petition being received. Council gave third reading to the bylaw and the new electoral boundaries for the County of Newell were accepted. The next election for County Council is Oct 2025.

Standalone Hospice Facility - Prairie Rose Hospice Palliative Care Society (PRHPCS) is pursuing the possibility of a standalone Hospice facility – currently 3 beds are “designated” as palliative care in the Brooks Health Centre.

What is Palliative Care? - compassionate comfort care that provides relief from the symptoms and physical and mental stress of a serious life-limiting illness. Palliative Care can be pursued at diagnosis, during curative treatment and follow-up. The focus of palliative care includes dignity, comfort & quality which continue to end of life care.

What is Hospice Care? – compassionate comfort care without curative intent – end of life.
