NewGrow is a public pitch competition by Brooks Newell Region Economic Development. Participants have a chance to receive up to $10,000 plus valuable business services, promotions and mentorship. Each pitch is scored out of 25 points across five categories: Financial Feasibility and Sustainability Innovation: Introduction of a new product or service Owner’s Skills: Capability to effectively implement the project Community Benefits: Non-economic contributions Economic Impact: Potential to attract more customers or improve business efficiency
Judges Panel: Kelly Rasmussen: Real estate agent with a commercial lending and banking background. Larry Pratt: Long time Brooks resident and owner of Shoppers Drug Mart. Robbie Hodgson: CPA with experience in tax, assurance, and small business management in agriculture, oil, and gas sectors. Amanda Philpot: County counsellor with family business in honey production. Fred Rattai: Entrepreneur with extensive experience in the restaurant industry and property renovation.
Presenters: In Sequin Studio of Dance - building TLC to make the studio look the way it feels for so many families that attend the dance studio - won the Fan Favourite $500. Tillery Farms - Raspberry and Strawberry farm fertigation system which regulates the pH/EC in the water and combines it with fertilizers - received $8,000. Hangar 28 - to create a space to connect Pilots with resources to get in the air safely at the Brooks Air Terminal - received $2,800. Twisted Roots Home Decor - anti-fatigue matting, new saw stop safety upgrade, workshops, epoxy classes, offering woodworking classes to schools - received $1,500. RedBow Co. - ebike rentals so customers can test out the benefits of ebikes without the commitment of purchasing - received $3,200. Prairie Playhouse - fun and engaging indoor venue tailored to young children and accessible throughout most days of the week - received $3,000. Lobster Mobsters - mini Mobsters fundraising platform for groups to sell seafood to friends and families - received $1,500. Journey to Wellness (formerly Wellness in Brooks) - includes but is not limited to massage, Reiki, yoga and Chinese medicine to be able to do renovations when an appropriate space is found - no funding received.
