Meeting with Premier/MLA Danielle Smith on June 25 at the County of Newell. Topics on the agenda for discussion were:

• Crop Diversification Centre South Revitalization.

• Newell Regional Hydrogen Hub Initiative.

• Newell Housing Foundation Continuing Care Capital Program Application – Connection Flats Independent Living Village.

• Highway 3 corridor development.

• Highway 873 from Brooks to Kinbrook Island and potential cost sharing opportunities.

Newell Region Hydrogen Hub - The Brooks Newell region is proposing to develop the Brooks Newell Hydrogen Hub. Phase One will assure trucking and agricultural users that they can replace some or all of the diesel fuel with hydrogen without any adverse operational or economic effects. Phase Two will focus on developing market supply. Each hub will include hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling capability. The first hub is planned to be built within the Brooks Newell region, close to Highway 1 and the CP Rail line. The project cost is anticipated to be $10 million. About 75% of the project is planned to be funded through municipal and private investment. Brooks Newell is working closely with various Alberta granting agencies to identify potential sources for the remaining funding.

The County of Newell is running a pilot project, installing conversion kits in diesel-powered equipment and evaluating their performance using hydrogen.

Two New Daycares - the MPC approved two new daycares in Brooks. The first is at 119 1 Avenue East which was previously Curtis Cleaners. This new daycare will have room for 36 children and a fenced playground area. The second is at 1308 2A Street West, sharing space with Ebony Cosmetics and Hair Lounge.

Bylaw to Combat Illegal Dumping - City Council introduced new measures to address the issue of illegal dumping within the city. The updated waste management bylaw now empowers officers to issue tickets to individuals who direct others to illegally dump waste, as well as to the owners of registered vehicles involved in such activities. This is particularly crucial when video footage captures the vehicle but not the driver. The revised bylaw also mandates that any waste or prohibited waste must be removed within 24 hours of receiving notice.

Communities in Bloom - Rose Garden Tea.  Saturday July 13 from 2:00-4:00. The gardens are located on the grounds of the museum. This is a free event and open to the public.
