2023 Rural Beautification Nominations and Tour - Residents that own more than a one-acre yard and maintain it in an aesthetically pleasing manner have the opportunity to be recognized. Nominations for the Rural Beautification program can be made by calling the Agricultural Services Department at the County of Newell 1-403-794-2311. Nomination deadline is noon Tuesday, July 11th. 

Anyone interested in touring the top three yards, please RSVP to 403-794-2311, by noon on July 18th. The tour will take place on Wednesday, July 26th at 9:00am. Lunch and refreshments will be included.

Community Clean-Up - Starting with a BBQ for Volunteers 5-6PM on Thursday, July 13 on the East Side of City Hall. Clean-Up will take place from 6-8PM. This event is for all ages and is a fun, quick way to make a difference in the community, gain volunteer hours, or be a team-building event. If I compete 2023 Alberta 55+ Summer Games can I still volunteer? Yes! The only restriction is you can not volunteer for the event you are competing in. 55+ Summer Game Coordinators will be at the Brooks Farmers’ Market to answer other questions this week. The games take place August 17th - 20th. Volunteers are needed.

Kinbrook Connection Pathway Update - Construction of phase 2 of the pathway to Lake Newell will begin in late July. The goal is to complete the path from Kinbrook Island provincial park to Bantry Bay this year. The completion of the final phase is planned for 2024.

Firefighters were deployed in May to Northern Alberta to assist the province with the wildfires that were burning. Fire apparatus and firefighters went to assist with the wildfires in Edson, Wildwood, and, Garden Creek. On June 29th, the final units were recalled home to protect their communities during the hottest months of summer in the County. There were six deployments of volunteer firefighters. This meant that 21 local businesses were without key workers, leaving a void for them to fill. Fire Services is preparing to hold a recognition night. This event will be held at the end of July. The public will be welcome to attend.
