Lane departure assist technology - There's a need for the County of Newell to discuss the future approach to line painting. With more new vehicles equipped with lane departure assist technology, there's a question of whether to start painting all road lines again, which would increase the budget by 33%, or to continue the current practice of painting only two lines. This cost-cutting measure was implemented about eight years ago in alignment with Alberta Transportation's practices on provincial highways.

Kinbrook Connection Pathway work was anticipated to commence at the end of July then revised to commence in August. However, the contractor had to revise the schedule to early September. Outstanding work includes completion of the remaining 6Km paved pathway and all amenities; sunshades, trash/recycle receptacles, benches, bicycle barricades, trailhead signage, trailhead plaza at the County Administration Office before the end of October.

Lake Newell Resort Pathway tendering remains deferred and dependent upon land acquisition. Work is proceeding with the subdivision of acquired land to facilitate the pathway and stormwater management.

Duchess Minor Ball requested $6,100 from the county to install shale on the infield areas of two ball diamonds located on county-owned land. Funding from the public Municipal Reserve account aligns with the intended use of these funds. The council discussed the merits of the request, acknowledging the high use of the facilities and the efforts of volunteers. Some council members expressed concerns about the lack of detailed financial information and representation from the association. Despite these concerns, there was general support for the funding.

Request to rename one of the City's Parks. A letter was received by City admin after the City rescinded numerous policies, including the Parks Naming Criteria Policy. When the resident contacted Admin, they were advised that further discussion would occur and a new Policy would be developed.

Problematic intersection on Highway 1 will be brought to the attention of the Minister of Transportation. During the upcoming RMA Fall Convention County Council wants to emphasize the urgent need for action. Specifically, a speed reduction to 80 km/h at the intersection that has seen two significant accidents in recent months.

Unauthorized dust abatement was discovered by County officials. The Traffic Safety Act and local policies prohibit unauthorized activities on County roads. Residents are encouraged to use the County's subsidized dust abatement program, which offers a cost-effective solution for maintaining road conditions. The County plans to remove the unauthorized product.

Duchess Recreation Center presented a funding request to the County Council to cover costs for a flooring resurfacing project. The flooring had developed significant cracks, posing a safety risk and prompting an urgent replacement to avoid cancelling youth sports events. The original flooring, installed 8 years ago had an estimated lifespan of 10-15 years, the accelerated wear is due to heavy use by the school and community.

Brooks Municipal Enforcement Report - during the past quarter, officers dedicated over 1,000 hours to traffic enforcement, addressing violations such as speeding, distracted driving, and Class 7 driver infractions. A traffic stop of one individual resulted in five warrants and the seizure of methamphetamine. Officers also investigated dog and cat complaints, issued one new hen license under the pilot program (now totalling six of the ten available), and addressed an animal neglect case and a dog attack with charges laid.
