School Starts With Construction – Starting September 1, sewer repairs will cause changing traffic disruptions along 4 Avenue W between 7 Street W and 10 Street W for about three weeks. Work directly in front of Griffin Park School will be limited to weekends, and at least one sidewalk will remain open, although the open side may change. What Will This Year’s Enrolment Show? – With no council minutes to report this week, I followed the data down a few rabbit holes. One led to school enrolment, where the published figures for 2025–26 tell two different stories. Across the communities it tracks, the Alberta Regional Dashboard shows 10,258 more K–12 students, with Calgary and Edmonton accounting for 9,244 of that increase. Grasslands moved in the opposite direction, declining by 182 students. Its six Brooks schools lost 173 students, its seven rural community schools lost 21, and its seven colony schools added 12. Meanwhile, the four local Catholic schools added 37 students, Newell Christian added 26, and École Le Ruisseau added four. This fall’s count will show whether those patterns continue. Where Alberta Goes to Work – Net commuter flow compares workers coming in with residents leaving for work. Wood Buffalo led Alberta at +11,620; Airdrie was lowest at −8,310. Closer to home, Taber recorded +670, Drumheller +600 and Strathmore −750. Brooks nearly balanced at +35, masking about 1,580 residents leaving and an estimated 1,615 workers coming in. The latest Alberta Regional Dashboard figures come from the 2021 Census.
