Alberta 55+ Summer Games Report Total Revenue: $237,800 Registration fees from participants, $72,100. Gaming funds from a casino and a raffle, $44,400. The County of Newell and City of Brooks each contributed $35,000. Local sponsors and donors provided $26,000 in sponsorship. Banquet ticket sales, camping, tours and liquor sales $25,240. Merchandise $9,600.
In kind donations created massive savings: Transportation ($15,000 saved) Facility rentals ($11,000 saved) Marketing/advertising ($4,000 saved) Equipment ($3,600 saved)
Total Expenses: $176,400 Food costs $49,850. Hired staff necessary to pull off the event $36,700. Facility fees & upgrades $21,570. Banquet and Opening Ceremonies $17,000. Merchandise $10,400.
Legacy Project & Funds (Total Surplus: $61,400) The Planning Committee would like to put $15,000 towards a sun-shelter on the Kinbrook Connection Pathway as a legacy project for the Region. It is suggested that the remaining funds be held in reserve and be used towards hosting the 2026 Southern Alberta Summer Games. Participants raved about volunteers/guides, saying they were friendly, warm, helpful, and going above and beyond. Many said next time they were in the area, they wouldn’t drive by Brooks but would stop, which was the goal!

"RUGG" Recreation User Group Grant for facility enhancements, equipment purchases or support on capital projects in Brooks and District. The total funding requested in 2023 was $95,680.
The total amount awarded was $41,180.
The total amount awarded included $11,180 carried over from 2022. Brooks Gymnastics Club - Equipment Upgrade $7,048 Brooks Minor Baseball Association - Equipment Update $7,000 Brooks Minor Hockey Association - Gear for the Curious $6,917 Brooks Regional Ballpark Association - Kitchen Upgrade $5,396 Brooks Motocross Club - Club/Track Facility Enhancement $5,600 Brooks Lacrosse Association - Jersey Project $4,747 Brooks Community Football - Team Equipment $3,500 Brooks Special Olympics - Stopwatches/Fins/Bowling Uniforms $977
The Grading Matrix has changed to disqualify any application that does not have a need/problem clearly identified, or does not solve the identified problem. Applicants will now need to identify a "Target Audience" on the application form - either youth (under the age of 18) or adults (ages 18 and over). In the event of a tie, the application serving youth will be given priority. RUGG Applications must be submitted no later than February 28th.

Urban Forestry Management Plan update: developed to protect and conserve City trees, manage the removal, replacement and maintenance of City trees and plan for a sustainable and healthy future urban forest. Here are some of the highlights: The budget for tree maintenance, contracted services is $60,780. A portion of this money is being used to buy trees for replacements, and the Beatification Program includes replacing the Tower Poplars along Cassils Road and adding trees on both sides of the pathway that has been extended to the corner of Duke of Sutherland and Cassils Rd. 64 trees were planted along the new pathway in Pleasant Park. The City worked with EcoBrooks and the 4H Club to landscape the area under the mural at the CCC Building. EcoBrooks provided the funds and the 4H Club provided the Kid Power. The City is continually working with the Rotary Club to plan different areas for improvement whether it is plantings, benches or tables. The City works with Communities in Bloom to increase the growth of the Commemorative Forest by planting from 20 to 30 trees a year. Tree pruning has been divided into 4 Zones. All 4 zones are being pruned within 1 year. Since 2018, 215 trees have been removed. Since 2018, 891 trees, 440 shrubs have been planted. TD Bank supplied manpower and native shrubs to plant around Lake Stafford and Meadow Lake. Canadian Tire Donated $1500 of plants for the Edible garden. EcoBrooks, 4H Club and Choosewell donated time and money for this project.

Alberta Indigenous and Municipal Police Transition Grant for a feasibility study that evaluates various policing and community safety models. This study aims to determine which model is the best fit for a community. Options include a stand-alone police service or a regional equivalent. Joint Services Committee proposed that the Brooks Newell Region apply for AIMPTGP funding. Although questions were raised at both City and County council meetings as to the bias of the study the motion was passed to apply for the grant. The grant program objectives include: Exploring and/or incorporating innovative, promising, or proven policing models and public safety practices; Considering community engagement focused on understanding the underlying causes of crime and victimization; to create public safety measures and activities dedicated to crime reduction outcomes; and, Providing the community with perspective of the policing model that directly addresses public safety concerns/measures for the community and its citizens.
The feasibility study will examine the possibility of implementing a regional police service, considering community background, history, and policing statistics. It will also provide a cost-benefit analysis and insights into the appropriate level and mix of policing resources based on the data.
