SPEC Clarifies Questions About Election and Program Changes - Staff members who run for political office must take an unpaid leave during their campaign, and if elected, must resign to avoid any real or perceived conflict of interest. The issue arose after Ken Shields, a SPEC staff member, was acclaimed to a vacant seat on Rosemary Town Council. While SPEC’s Board reviewed the matter, Grasslands Regional FCSS informed the organization that it would not renew funding for SPEC’s MakerSpace Youth Program. This means Mr. Shields’ position will end on December 31, 2025. Therefore, the SPEC Board decided that asking him to withdraw from his new council role was unnecessary. The organization is exploring options for future youth programming in the new year.
