Local Resolutions at ABmunis - City and County councillors joined communities from across Alberta at the ABmunis Convention last week, where members debated resolutions that guide provincial advocacy. Two resolutions with strong local ties stood out this year. Brooks supported a call to extend the lifespan of fire trucks so municipalities can rely on well-maintained equipment longer and avoid costly replacements. Duchess brought forward a resolution to reduce barriers for rural students entering post-secondary education. Here are some of the resolutions presented: Municipal Accommodation Tax Asks for a provincial legal framework allowing municipalities to implement a hotel/accomodation tax to support tourism. Extended Lifespan of Fire Apparatus Asks for a review of rules requiring pump recertification at 20 years, allowing municipalities to keep well-maintained fire trucks longer without facing insurance penalties. Recreation Facilities Funding Asks for a provincial funding program that municipalities can apply to for both new and existing recreation facilities—pools, arenas, rinks, and more. Midwifery Care for All Albertans Asks for a comprehensive midwifery strategy that expands access, improves retention, and gives midwives more flexibility in how they provide care. Reducing Barriers to Post-Secondary Education Asks for a provincial strategy to help rural, remote, and small-city students access university and college through better financial aid, broadband, mentorship, and academic supports.
