Why did you choose to be involved? Volunteering my time with organizations and groups outside of my day-to-day work life gives me the opportunity to lend my skills and expertise in a valuable way. Volunteering is a personally rewarding way for me to engage with members of the community from different backgrounds and professions and to learn from them and the experiences we share. Hosting the 2023 Alberta 55+ Summer Games is a great opportunity for Brooks and Newell County to share our region’s charm and diversity with the whole province. Are there challenges with finding volunteers? I think it’s natural for people to have some hesitancy around volunteering, especially when it’s with a group or organization that is outside of the potential volunteer’s comfort zone. It can seem daunting for people to take on a role that pushes them to have new or different responsibilities, but it’s important to remember that volunteering comes in many forms and is rewarding at every level. Our volunteer positions run the gamut with roles on the planning committee, as well as various positions both leading up to and during the games, including, but not limited to: event photography, result entry, banquet volunteers, sporting event volunteers, first aid attendants, and venue set-up. We have a position that will comfortably fit into everyone’s lives, regardless of their skill or experience level. If you have time to give, we have positions to fill that time! What keeps you going on difficult days? I have spent countless hours of my life in volunteer roles and one thing has remained constant is that there will be days you feel like you’re busier than you intended, and you wonder how you will accomplish everything on your to-do list. On those days, I remind myself why I’m here and what impact my time and contribution are having on the organization I’m involved with—and I also make sure I have lots of coffee on stand-by!
