 RECOMMENDATION 
 

Ride-share in Brooks is being discussed by City council. Sylvan Lake is the only municipality of similar size that allows rideshare. They require the appropriate licence, criminal record check, insurance and an inspection, which are also the requirements for taxis.

 

“The bottom line is it is not required” Electoral Division Boundary Review is not required, but County of Newell Director of Corporate Services Layne Johnson cautioned that there is always a potential for a disgruntled individual, to challenge an election if the County did not give proportional representation consideration. Rolling Hills Councillor Dan Short suggested that it would be hard to make the argument that equalizing the county districts is the wrong thing to do. Council was split as to whether electoral boundaries should remain as they are or be reviewed. The decision was made to ask ratepayers for their feedback.

 

Brooks Bandits will bid to host the 2024 or 2025 Centennial Cup. 10 teams will play a total of 25 games. The national championships hosted in 2019 consisted of 5 teams. The estimated economic impact in 2019 was approximately $3.5 million. A legacy fund in the amount of $350,000 was created and allocated as follows:

  • $25,000 - Future event hosting

  • $35,000 - Minor hockey funding

  • $50,000 - Scholarships

  • $240,000 - Arena Improvements

Arena improvements include fixing the dressing room roof and improving the internet speed. The rest will be used for future arena improvements.

An application for a Kenneling Service was approved. Tia Argue & Kelsey Styles received approval to open a Kennel at 823 3 Avenue East (behind Public Works Bldg). Some of the conditions that apply are for pens, rooms, and runs to be adequately soundproofed and outdoor use be limited to 7AM-10PM Mon. - Fri., 9AM-10PM on weekends.

 

55+ Summer Games Coordinator is Kelly Sanford, she is the current Provincial President of the Elk’s overseeing 98 lodges and 3400 volunteers. Kelly organized bringing Paul Brandt to Brooks this past summer.

 

Air quality monitoring - Alberta Environment and Protected Areas would like to locate a permanent station for air quality monitoring in the City of Brooks. The suggested locations for the air quality monitoring trailer are:

  1. Prairie Pioneers Centre - 420 1 Ave W

  2. Fairview Reservoir - 40 Fairview Rd E

  3. Public Works Shop - 204 7 St E
