Grasslands Regional FCSS Strategic Plan focuses on expanding programs in rural areas, especially for seniors.

What they aim to achieve over the next 5 years:

  1. Be recognized and appreciate by the community as a key organization providing services and support.

  2. Support and provide programs to strengthen families and increase safety.

  3. Provide internally planned and delivered events and projects in addition to funding programs and projects delivered by community partners. FCSS staff and Board members are more directly involved in community programs and funded projects.

  4. Provides mental health services focused on rural needs and individuals involved in agricultural, hospice, and palliative care services.

  5. Deliver and support other organizations to provide programs in rural areas. The focus is on the senior population in rural communities.

Grasslands FCSS also announced the revamp of its website and encouraged everyone to explore it.

Traffic Bylaw fines of Brooks were compared to five similarly sized municipalities. Brooksโ€™ parking fines, typically $57, were found to be lower than the $75โ€“$100 range in other areas. The committee discussed raising the fine to $81, matching the Traffic Safety Act's penalty. They also agreed to review all City Bylaw fines in preparation for upcoming budget talks.

Recent park renamings were discussed by Brooks City Council. The committee referred to McKay Park which was renamed JBS Canada Park. In this instance, the renaming followed specific thresholds related to corporate donations. They considered placing plaques in renamed parks to provide historical context. Information will be gathered from other municipalities on their naming practices, including reviewing naming rights for City-owned buildings.

Tax sale will be set where properties with unpaid tax arrears, including parcels of land and designated manufactured homes, will be auctioned. Benchmark Assessment Inc. provided market value estimates to set reserve bids. Properties will be sold "as is, where is," with a 10% non-refundable deposit required on the sale day, and the balance due within 10 days.

Speed limit in alley near Fairview Park Lane was asked to be lowered due to concerns about children using the alley and vehicles travelling too fast. The speed limit is 50 km/h. Changes would require new signage and set a precedent. Therefore Council Committee denied the speed limit reduction but suggested "children playing" sign request be brought to the Cityโ€™s Sign Committee for review.

Norway Rat sightings in several Alberta cities in 2009, including Brooks, prompted the Alberta Rat Control Program to maintain the province's "Rat Free" status. Municipalities cooperate in enforcing the program. The City of Brooks appointed Joey Carillo as a Pest Inspector to enforce the Act.

Siksika Nation will lead cultural events in Brooks on September 27, showcasing dance, music, and design to honour Truth and Reconciliation Day. The hope is that a wide range of citizens can take part in learning about Indigenous culture and remembering those who suffered in residential schools. Our participation in Truth and Reconciliation Day events will help highlight and show appreciation for the Indigenous population in our community.
