Council Compensation - A new compensation policy for City Council will take effect November 1, 2025. Under the policy, the Mayor will receive a base salary of $72,000 per year, and Councillors will receive $30,000 per year. Both salaries will increase annually by 2.5%. Councillors can also receive per diems for work on boards, committees, and ad hoc meetings approved by Council. For meetings up to 2 hours, councillors are paid $80 up to a maximum of $285 for meetings over 4 hours, including travel.

Legislative Compliance Check - In February, Council asked Alberta Municipal Affairs to complete a Legislative Compliance Check (LCC). The LCC is part of the Municipal Accountability Program and is designed to review a municipality’s compliance with the Municipal Government Act and other provincial legislation. It helps identify both strengths and areas where improvements may be needed. The Minister of Municipal Affairs accepted the City’s request in March. However, since then, the Interim CAO has reviewed City practices and found them to already be in line with provincial legislation and best practices.

New Soccer Fields - Planning has started at 75 – 17 Street East. Nearby residents raised concerns about the fields and parking lot being too close to homes, extra traffic, and the overall impact on their neighbourhood. In response, the City made several changes:

• A 2-hectare buffer will separate the fields from nearby homes.

• The parking lot is on the far east side, off 17th Street East, instead of near 14th Street East.

• The busiest fields will also be located on the east side, farther away from homes.

The updated site plan was shared with residents, and no new comments were received.

Southeast Sector Area Structure Plan will guide how the land east of the Brooks Campus of Medicine Hat College, stretching toward Meadow Lake. The plan makes room for more housing choices, new shops and business space, and parks and trails within walking distance of homes. It also protects natural areas like Meadow Lake and One Tree Creek while ensuring growth and infrastructure efficiency. A public open house will be held before final adoption, set for October 6, to view the Southeast Sector ASP and ask questions.

Municipal Election - The Municipal General Election will be held on October 20, 2025. Nomination period for the 2025 General Election will run until noon on nomination day, September 22, 2025.
