Permitting a ride share in Brooks - Council Committee discussed whether or not they should move forward with the proposed Bylaw that would allow a Ride Share company to operate in the City. The requirements & restrictions in the proposed Bylaw would apply to all transportation services operating in the City. Before proceeding the three local taxicab companies will be asked to give their input.

 

Kourtney Hiebert is the new Workforce Development Officer for Brooks Newell Region. She has a background in communications and marketing, and years of experience in corporate recruiting and human resources. Kourtney is also the owner of Mom Life Maternity, a small retail boutique in Downtown Brooks, so she understands entrepreneurship and what it means to operate a small business.

The Workforce Development Officer is a new position that was created to help tackle the workforce crisis being experienced in our Region.

A large part of Kourtney’s new position will be the management and implementation of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program. The program attracts and endorses skilled labourers to work in our community. Since launching the program in July 2022, there have been 27 regional businesses participate and 40 endorsement letters have been issued for people to fill local vacancies.

 

Jim Third has been appointed for a two-year term to the Municipal Planning Commission. The MPC receives and considers all applications for Development Permits and Subdivisions.

Arts, Culture, and Heritage Board Grant applications are now being accepted until February 28! The intent is to support initiatives related to arts, culture and heritage. Full details here.

 

Regional Assessment Review Board positions are available for citizens of the City of Brooks, County of Newell, Town of Bassano, and the Villages of Duchess and Rosemary. Members are required to take online Provincial training to learn the applicable legislation in relation to fair and equitable property assessments. Members will receive remuneration for both training and hearing participation. If you are interested in joining this Board, please contact Shelley Thomas.

 

Estimated to cost $852,500, the Brooks Bandits have prepared a bid to host either the 2024 or 2025 Centennial Cup consisting of 10 teams. The City and the County are each contributing $50,000. The national championships hosted in 2019 consisted of 5 teams. In addition to the approximately $3.5 million economic benefit, the 2019 tournament created a legacy fund in the amount of $350,000. This legacy fund was allocated as follows:

  • $25,000 - Future event hosting

  • $35,000 - Minor hockey funding

  • $50,000 - Scholarships

  • $240,000 - Arena Improvements

Arena improvements to date include fixing their dressing room roof and improving their internet speed. The rest will be used for future arena improvements.
