Brooks Animal Protection Society (BAPS) services the City of Brooks, and also the County of Newell including Duchess, Rosemary, Tilley, and Bassano. They provide a safe place for animals that are lost and waiting for their owner to claim them, and animals that have been surrendered, providing food and care while they wait for placement into loving homes. BAPS is facing a financial crisis due to increase cost of food, vet care and utilities, and a surge in animal surrenders. They currently house 15 dogs and over 103 cats, Despite volunteer fundraising efforts, BAPS is overwhelmed. The County agreed to provide $7,000 to help cover this yearβs cost. A concern was addressed that residents were denied additional cats from the shelter after losing some on their farms. Farm cats, used for pest control, face risks such as highways and predators. The shelter allegedly stopped providing cats to them, claiming inadequate care. In response, the shelter representative clarified that while barn cats (those better suited for outdoor or farm life) are not always available, the decision to deny cats based on such circumstances is not in practice. They encourage anyone with issues to contact the shelter for clarification.
