County Drought Plan - The County received a letter from Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Rebecca Shultz, identifying the Province is currently at Stage 4 of 5 of the Provincial Drought Plan. They requested that all municipalities undertake efforts to develop a water shortage plan. Some of the questions that creating a Drought Plan raised are:

• Are Water restrictions the solution or is it more effective to impose financial penalties?

• Does the County need to do more with implementing Water Conservation Education and Programs – i.e. educating on fixing leaks, shortening shower times, sprinkler system timers, xeriscaping or implementing programs such as Rain Barrel Program, Low Flow Fixture Program where incentives would be offered for water users to purchase and install water-conserving measures.

Cassil CPKC Crossings - Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC – formerly Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), has planned to upgrade RR155 and RR154 crossings in Cassils from timber to concrete in 2024. The estimated cost to the County for this work is $337,646 (50% of the total).

Locally produced hydrogen fuel - County Council is exploring the level of interest in developing a market for locally produced hydrogen fuel. This would build upon the history of the Newell region as a center for energy production. The Federal and Provincial Governments have implemented targeted funding programs focused on the development of the hydrogen industry.
