The project may receive up to 60% federal funding, increasing the budget from $100,000 to $250,000 without additional local tax impact. This will enhance the City’s trail system, improving outdoor experiences for residents.

Lake Newell Resort Pathway Costs - The estimated cost of the Lake Newell Resort Pathway Project has increased from $1 million to between $1.6M and $1.78M, prompting Council to explore funding solutions. Originally, property owners were to cover 75% of the cost, with 25% funded by the County Recreation Fund, but the higher costs have led to concerns about the financial impact on residents.

Council has decided to move forward with the full $1.78M plan, including additional features, and apply for federal grant funding to cover the increase. Support for Rising Insurance Costs - Rising insurance costs are putting financial pressure on community groups that provide essential services and programs in the County. To help ease this burden, the County of Newell is developing a program to cover insurance deductibles for not-for-profit organizations, ensuring they can continue operating without the risk of sudden, unmanageable expenses. Supporting these groups means stronger local programs, events, and services that benefit everyone.

2024 Planning & Development Review - The County saw steady development in 2024, though permit applications slowed toward the end of the year. Council approved several Land Use Bylaw amendments, including updates to live-work unit regulations, secondary suite policies, and residential storage allowances. A well-received public open house in June will be hosted again in 2025.

Bassano Fire Hall Renovation - The Bassano Fire Hall renovation is almost finished, with final flooring and minor details being completed. A final inspection is scheduled, and once approved, the fire department will move in as soon as possible.

Tree Health & Maintenance Workshop - The County of Newell is hosting a free workshop on March 25 from 10 AM – 3 PM at the Griffin Building (CDC). This informative event will cover tree care, pest management, environmental impacts, fruit tree pruning, and the EID Shelterbelt & Habitat Programs, along with a hands-on demonstration on pruning, species selection, and planting. Guest speakers Toso Bozic and Daniel Buell will share their expertise. The workshop is open to everyone, with lunch provided, and registration is required by March 18.

Lower Coyote Numbers in January - The County’s Coyote Control Incentive Program (CCIP) brought in 328 coyotes in January, which is less than half the usual number but consistent with trends seen in 2024. More hunters are needed in specific areas to help manage coyote populations. The County continues to monitor the situation and explore options for effective predator control.
